Great Books to Start Reading as an Adult

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F is my favorite recommendation for starting a book habit with a self-help book.

As someone who found it hard to let people’s opinions not get to me when I’m alone, the book’s title is what sold me!

It also helped that Mark Manson’s advice was truthful, practical and filled with humor.

The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

Even though The Total Money Makeover is a financial book, this book choice makes me laugh since some of what he teaches is a bit controversial (that’s what enticed me to read for myself).

I don’t follow Dave’s teachings to a T but I definitely have used what he has taught to help me save intelligently and think about my money differently.

I would definitely give this book a shot and even listen to a few of his podcasts.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

If you liked Hunger Games (even in movie form I won’t judge), then you will like cozying up with the Divergent series!

Divergent is the first fictional book I recommend, because you will find parts of yourself in the 5 sanctions and have empathy for Tris and Four throughout the series.

I would give Divergent a try and then read Insurgent, Allegiant and Four.

Atomic Habits by James Clear

James Clear’s book is made for anyone who has trouble being consistent with their goals and personal growth.

At the time I read Atomic Habits, I wanted to get into a better routine to start working out and writing blog posts consistently!

Lessons you learn can apply to different areas of your life (managing finances, starting a business, studying more consistently, etc) just by adding this to your night routine.

Money Master the Game by Tony Robbins

One of the books that immersed me into the financial realm, is Money Master the Game (fully immersed because I had 0 clue about concepts when I started reading)!

Tony Robbins explains financial concepts such as annuities, mutual funds and investing in more depth and shares interviews with BIG NAME folks which is rare to see.

I feel that this book is great to read once you have more financial backing, but you can still read it and learn a lot which is what I experienced.

Whistling Vivaldi by Claude M. Steele

If you are into books that make you think about life and people, you will learn a lot from reading Whistling Vivaldi.

Steele introduces how stereotypes affect us by the social categories we all exist in (ex. race, mental health, ethnicity, etc).

I personally read this book in my Race and Mental Health course in college, and it is a book that will forever change how you see others.

You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

As a homebody who likes reading self-care books, You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero spoke to me at first glance.

Parts of it helped motivate me, made me smile and it was nice to listen to a few affirmations at the time.

This book made me more curious to read her other book You Are a Badass at Making Money.

Evicted by Matthew Desmond

I need to first say, Evicted has a special place in my heart.. it is the book that helped me turn to the social sciences in university when I was undecided.

While this book goes into pretty heavy topics such as poverty and social justice, those topics are what make you look at the world in a different, necessary way.

This is not a book for the faint of heart, but it is a book that will entice you to continue reading more books to learn more and be a student of the world.

Happy You Are Here!

I hope you liked these book recommendations!! I plan on updating this list as I read more too.
